New Scholarships Announced-- New for 2010: Dr. Donald R. Atkinson Memorial Scholarship: ($750 for a current year graduate with at least a 2.5 GPA and financial need.) Dr. Donald R. Atkinson graduated from Baraboo High School in 1958. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1970. Dr. Atkinson was a professor of counseling psychology at University of California-Santa Barbara for thirty years. He was a pioneer, author, and leader in the field of multicultural counseling psychology. This scholarship is for a needy current grad planning to attend a Wisconsin school, who has held a part-time job during high school and participated in extra-curricular activities. The recipient can't have more than $5,000 in other scholarships. Elva Staveness Christopher Memorial Scholarship: ($1,000 for a nursing/R.N. major with major financial need). Elva Staveness Christopher was born in Ontario, Canada and attended nursing school in Utica, New York. Elva wanted to be a nurse since she was about six years old, even though she did not then know what a nurse actually did. Elva left New York and arrived in Chicago with $16 in her pocket. She found she did not care much for life in the big city and moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where she worked first as a private duty nurse, and later, as a hospital nurse at all of the major Madison hospitals. She later moved to Sauk County where she served as Sauk County Nurse for 17 years before retiring in 1982. Fashion Rage Scholarship: [2 @ $500 (Panache cosmetology recipient) and $500 (Fashion, graphic arts, theater set design recipient)]. For current year graduates with an interest in cosmetology or the fashion industry. Fashion Rage, in the Water Street Arts District of Baraboo, is focused on fashion, art, and trend-setting hair and make-up to bring it all together in a perfect combination making Fashion Rage a riveting and memorable event. Panache Academy of Beauty and Next Level Communications have created Fashion Rage for students of beauty and art to introduce their talents. Distinguished participants will present collections from their spring and summer lines. As the events grow, so will the scholarships to assist students of art and beauty achieve their dreams! Harry Jantz Memorial MATC Scholarship:(2 @ $500--one male recipient and one female recipient). For current year graduates with B or C GPAs. Must plan to attend MATC and major in accounting, agriculture equipment technology, automotive technology, laboratory technician, business technology, carpentry, diesel equipment technology, electronics, horticulture, medical assistant, barber, machine tooling, dietetic technology, culinary arts, surgical technician, veterinary technician, or graphic design. Mr. Jantz was a 1948 graduate of Baraboo High School. He was a lifelong farmer with a deeply ingrained work ethic and a love for the land. He gave generously to his family, church, and community and was always ready to lend a hand. Shirley & John Liebig Memorial Scholarship: ($1,200 for a student interested in music with major financial need. There are no school or academic limitations.) Shirley DuBois Liebig was born and raised in La Rue. John Liebig was a die-cuter. After their marriage, the couple lived in Milwaukee for many years. Shirley worked 11 years as a telephone operator. She later returned to Baraboo and generously endowed several scholarships for Baraboo High School graduates. Henry C. and Corwin G. Moeller Scholarship: (Amount based upon investment earnings during the previous year. Financial need is a pre-requisite.) This scholarship was previously administered by the City of Baraboo. BCSC is proud to take over the administrative tasks! The recipient must demonstrate some financial need, be a current year graduate, and prove to be deserving based upon application responses. Henry C. Moeller left $5,000 to the City of Baraboo in his will in 1958 to create a scholarship in his and his wife's name. The money was to be invested by the City Treasurer in a high grade preferred stock investment considered to be sound and conservative, and specifically named the Massachusetts Investors Trust. The Board of Education was to administer the scholarship and annually select the most deserving graduate to receive only the earnings of the investment for use towards further education. The City of Baraboo passed the administration of this scholarship on to BCSC in 2009. We will award the first Moeller Scholarship at the 2010 Honors Night. BCSC will do a good job. Our organization promises to keep the Moeller family's interests at heart as they select the appropriate recipient for this award in the years going forward. Robert J. Nall Memorial Scholarship: ($500 for a mathematics or accounting major.) A membership in Baraboo Youth Bowling is also desired. This scholarship is named for Robert J. Nall, a 2000 graduate of Baraboo High School. Robert was a wonderful, kindhearted young man and a great father and husband. His dream was to return to school for accounting, as he always loved math and felt this would be a great career to provide for his family. Robert was an avid bowler, a PBA member, and served on the Board of the Baraboo Men’s Bowling Association. Though Robert passed away in 2008, he touched many lives in the short time he spent with us. The Family of Robert Nall would like to thank the Baraboo U.S.B.C. Bowling Association, whose Generosity helped make this scholarship possible. Chris Rector Memorial Scholarship: $500 (one) and $1000 (one). For current year graduates who have participated in band and/or cross country. A minimal 2.750 GPA is required. Chris was a wonderful person inside and out. He was only on this earth for a very short time, but he made the most of his time here. He has touched so many people and has inspired people to help others. That was Chris! He always had a smile for you and definitely would be there to pick you up when you were down, support you in a difficult decision, or encourage you to reach further and do more than you thought you could. He loved nothing more than to spend time with his family and friends. His family were his friends. Cross country and band were where he excelled and really found himself. Not that he was the fastest runner or played the number one chair, but the glow inside Chris radiated when he was doing one of these two things. Chris will always be loved and never forgotten. When Chris was born, he came into this world crying, but he lived his life in such a way that when he left this world, the world cried. Thank you Chris! You are amazing!
Plus BCSC has added two David Hedgepath Memorial Scholarships. These weren't listed in our book last year...but we gave them anyway. The requirements for these two additions are: David Hedgepath Memorial Attendance Scholarship (Amount to be determined.) Perfect attendance throughout high school is required. BHS will give us a list of students who qualify. PLEASE APPLY IF YOU QUALIFY. Only BCSC applicants will be considered for this scholarship. David Hedgepath Memorial IGNITE Scholarship (Amount to be determined.) Any student who applies for a BCSC scholarship and is also a member of IGNITE will be considered for this scholarship. PLEASE APPLY IF YOU QUALIFY. Only BCSC applicants will be considered for this scholarship. Dave Hedgepath, a former assistant principal at BHS, was a man of conviction, dedication and faith, and he managed to impact a number of communities, both inside and outside the school walls. Dave was a coach and leader within the school. He was instrumental in creating the IGNITE group at the high school. IGNITE is an organization for young Christian students to join and share support and ideas for building a stronger community. Dave was always willing to be there for support, and he allowed students to become stronger Christian leaders because of his efforts. Dave also had a passion for the overall school environment, and he worked tirelessly to make the high school a better place for all students, always brightening up the pep rallies and creating programs to help students adjust to high school life. One particular area that Dave was especially fond of was the recognition of those students who showed the dedication and hard work necessary to maintain perfect attendance throughout their high school careers. Although these students often go unnoticed, Dave Hedgepath realized the importance of this accomplishment and he always made sure to give these students special recognition of the end of the year assembly. Dave was stricken with cancer at far too young an age, but we still see the results of his efforts at BHS. To honor his dedication and faith, two scholarships have been established. Important Reminder-- Beginning with the 2008-2009 school year, scholarship reimbursement checks issued by BCSC are made payable to the recipient's school. Please make note of this important change. Requests for reimbursement should be made BEFORE tuition bills are paid so these checks can be turned over to the school bursar's office. To accommodate this change, recipients may begin requesting reimbursement funds after July 1. Annual Report-- The past year was a very successful year for BCSC in accomplishing its mission. At Honors Night on May 13, 2010, BCSC awarded 103 scholarships totaling over $120,000. The steady growth of BCSC has required that we now embark on preparing a new five year strategic plan. The BCSC board will be looking at new ways to partner with our members and the Baraboo community. BCSC is entirely a volunteer run organization. It has no paid staff. We are completely dependant on civic minded citizens in our community. There are some ways that you might help BCSC continue to achieve our goals:
BCSC Awards 2009 Scholarships-- Baraboo High School seniors and graduates received over $130,000 in BCSC scholarships at the high school Honors Night held on May 14, 2009. The BCSC awarded 106 new scholarships that evening to students planning to attend 2- and 4-year colleges, as well as trade and technical schools during the 2009-2010 school year. Seventy-five of these scholarships were awarded to 2009 graduates; the remainder went to past graduates. You can see the complete list of 2009 winners by clicking on the Past Recipients link.
